Public, city leaders get preview of Asheville's new zero-emission buses

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) -- They're big, they're electric, and they're coming to Asheville soon.

On Friday, the city unveiled it's newest zero-emission buses.

Residents were able to hop on board and get a test ride on what's to come in a few months.
Councilwoman Julie Mayfield touted their effect on the environment.

She says once all five buses are in place, they will reduce the amount of carbon released into the air by 270 tons per year.

"I love transit. I love clean energy. This is the intersection of these two things, and the city has strong commitments on both of those fronts, and this is just a great step forward for us," Mayfield said.

The city is in the training phase with the new buses.

They are the product of a combination of city funds and both state and federal grants.

They're expected to go into service in late April or early May.
